Hazardous-materialsThe frigid cold on Friday that caused many schools to delay their openings didn’t affect University of Texas at Palestine campus.  But an 18-wheeler accident close to the university on Loop 256 did.  The commercial semi rig that was carrying ammonium nitrate turned over.  For the safety of the students and staff at UT, the classes were cancelled as the chemical is toxic and under certain conditions could ignite explosively.

The driver had minor injuries.  Otherwise no one else was hurt, and no chemical leak resulted from the accident.  It is unknown at this time whether the icy road conditions led to the commercial truck accident.
