It took emergency rescuers about 20 minutes early Saturday to get an Alice woman out of her vehicle after it was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler traveling at highway speed, police said.
The woman, 58, was flown by helicopter to Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial in serious condition, said Walter Gibson, a HALO-Flight paramedic. She was complaining of pelvic pain.
The crash was about 8 a.m. on U.S. Highway 281 near County Road 472, Texas Department of Public Safety officials said. The truck driver told police he looked to the side at a semitrailer that had him boxed-in as it passed, while driving about 60 mph behind the woman, said Trooper Ronnie Ramirez.
“He said he swerved to avoid hitting the woman’s car, but couldn’t avoid it,” Ramirez said. The truck driver was not cited at the scene. The accident still is being investigated, Ramirez said. The woman’s vehicle was pushed off the highway by the impact, but did not overturn. The Alice Fire Department was called to cut the doors off because they were jammed from the impact, Ramirez said.
