James Marples of The Gilmer Mirror did a fine tribute to a man who many would say as Mr. East Texas, Jon G. Marples (1953-2013). Jon resided in the Longview / Diana area since 1966. He had worked at Lowes Home Improvement Store in Longview for the past 20 years until respiratory illness claimed him. He was only age 59.
When not in East Texas, Jon was an avid hiker and climber who scaled just about any mountains of Colorado above 14,000 feet in altitude. Jon seemingly knew everybody. He patronized nearly every businesses in Diana, Harleton, Ore City, Gilmer, and several in Gladewater. It is said that he enjoyed German food at Simpsonville with the inevitable slice of pie for dessert.
